30 Works in 30 Days: My Artquest Recap Revealed!
30 Works 30 Days: Completed!
FINISHED 🙂 The Artquest 30works30days challenge, for which I painted one small abstract sketch to a brief, emailed to me each morning, became a daily ritual that I looked forward to. All paintings were done using mixed media on 10 x 8-inch canvas board. They were fun, sometimes rushed, sometimes leisurely, and all were thought-provoking.
The 30works30days challenge aims to inspire artists to engage in daily creativity, embrace uncertainty, and explore new ideas. With close to 800 participants worldwide, artists commit to producing a fresh piece of art each day throughout April, showcasing their creations on the Artquest website.
What is Artquest?
ArtQuest, is an organisation dedicated to supporting professional artists. It aims to help artists develop their practice and promotes equality for artists within the art industry.
How does the ‘30 works 30 days’ challenge work?
Each sunrise throughout April, a fresh prompt is delivered straight to the inbox of participating artists.
The challenge is to create an artwork based on the prompt, or ignore it and do your own thing, then share it on the ArtQuest platform before midnight. The artwork can be a painting, photograph, text, video or audio.
Miss the deadline and you are off the project.
The 30Works30Days challenge is designed to motivate artists to create rapidly, encourage new thinking, explore various styles, and experiment with different materials and techniques.
The daily prompts included:
- What brings you joy? Make a work by doing that
- Share a secret
- Make an artwork while being outside
- Take it apart and put it back together again
- Hate it
- Make a work inspired by something in your fridge
Occasionally I had time to enjoy a leisurely painting, but mostly, these paintings had to fit between other work commitments, a dental appointment, commissioned painting work, social media, website updates, sleeping, and eating. You get it. There wasn’t much time, which meant working fast. By adopting a rapid approach and sometimes taking shortcuts, I discovered new ideas and methods of working. This process was not only fun but also provided a chance to engage with fellow artists. I found great pleasure in reviewing the submissions each day and observing how others interpreted the prompt, their work was diverse and creative.

New Work
Some of these paintings I love, others not so much, but I discovered a new direction to pursue in my quest to paint water in an abstract form. Watch how the paintings developed during this project will influence the new work I produce in the upcoming weeks and months. I’ve got plans for several new collections 😊.
